Hogan Lovells expands Strategic Communications group with addition of crisis and litigation communications veterans Ian McCaleb and Robert Gemmill

Washington, D.C., 9 October 2018 – Hogan Lovells announced today that it is expanding its Strategic Communications group with the addition of Ian McCaleb and Robert Gemmill, Esq. Both are joining the Washington, D.C. office from Levick Strategic Communications as Managing Directors, Strategic Communications. They will focus on providing integrated communications services to the firm’s legislative and legal clients.

Ian McCaleb was most recently Practice Chair, Legal Advisory and Communications at Levick, where he provided reputation management, risk mitigation, crisis communications, and political intelligence services on high stakes litigation and government investigations. He brings over two decades of reporting experience, having previously worked for CNN, Fox News Channel, United Press International, McClatchy Newspapers, and Congressional Quarterly. He also served as a senior spokesman for the Criminal Division at the U.S. Department of Justice and senior counsel to the division’s Assistant Attorney General.

Robert Gemmill, a lawyer in McCaleb’s former group, is an experienced advisor to corporate clients facing bet-the-company lawsuits, government investigations, and a variety of legal actions that pose reputational risk. He represented clients throughout lengthy litigation and trials, helping to educate and shape public perception. Earlier in his career he was an Associate at Cyron & Miller focused on civil litigation, and has Congressional and gubernatorial campaign experience.

Mark Irion, Head of the firm’s Strategic Communications group, who originally brought the duo aboard at their previous firm, said, “Ian and Robert understand precisely how to work with attorneys to execute communication strategies that protect clients’ legal and reputational interests. With their crisis and litigation communication proficiency, Hogan Lovells can deliver more complete solutions on matters that lie at the nexus of policy, law, and media.”

McCaleb and Gemmill join a Strategic Communications practice launched last year by Irion to provide integrated communications advice to clients alongside the firm’s legal services offerings, and join two others brought on earlier this year, including Chase Kroll, whose focus is on integrating digital advocacy into the firm’s sizeable lobbying and public affairs practice.

McCaleb earned his B.A. from George Mason University and Gemmill earned his B.A. from Virginia Polytechnic and State University and his J.D. from Duquesne University School of Law.
