Hogan Lovells Celebrates 70 Years of Work in Mexico; Four Years after Merger

Mexico City, 20 August 2018 – International law firm Hogan Lovells is celebrating 70 years of practicing law in Mexico.

Four years ago we combined with prominent Mexican firm Barrera, Siqueiros y Torres Landa, giving Hogan Lovells’ Latin America practice expanded capabilities in Mexico City and Monterrey. The combination marked the first time an international firm merged with a large full service firm in Mexico.

Since the merger, our offices in Mexico have grown from 70 to 100 lawyers and business from our Mexico office has increased more than 25 percent.

“As part of a global firm we have been able to offer clients foresight on regulatory changes, opportunities to expand their footprint, and proactively guide them through litigation, IP, regulatory, trade and investment hurdles,” said Juan Francisco Torres Landa, Hogan Lovells Mexico City office managing partner. “Our office will continue to expand strategically by attracting multinational clients given our global platform and helping these and others navigate the various opportunities present in some of Mexico’s key industry sectors such as energy, infrastructure and transportation, automotive, life sciences, financial institutions, and consumer goods.

This past year our lawyers have offered clients advice on several first-of-their-kind matters such as:

  • advising the IFC and the China Mexico Fund on its participation in the ALTAN Consortium throughout the bidding and financing process of Red Compartida, the first PPP agreement to be executed in the Mexican telecoms industry
  • advising Jaguar Land Rover UK in the acquisition of GDV Imports and GDV Servicios for the launch of its new Mexican distribution subsidiary
  • representing Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) a joint venture with BHP Billiton Ltd., in its first exploration and production farm out project in association with a foreign company
  • advising Pemex Consortium in an agreement with Chevron and Inpex to bid for the rights to exploit a hydrocarbon block 120 kilometers off the coast of the north-eastern state of Tamaulipas (Gulf of Mexico deep waters), marking the first time Pemex has teamed up with private companies to bid for a concession
  • advising Qatar Petroleum on the execution of exploration and production contracts with the Mexican Government
  • helping Banorte in connection with the strategic sale of a real estate portfolio by Mexico Retail Properties (MRP) to Fibra Uno, the largest and first FIBRA in Mexico

In addition, several Hogan Lovells lawyers provided pro-bono legal advice to more than 50 victims of the earthquake last September.  Mexico City associate Lila Alejandra Gasca Enríquez has received Latin Lawyer’s 2018 Pro Bono Award for coordinating the firm’s pro bono response to the devastating 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck the region last September.
