Marc Elvinger at Hogan Lovells Luxembourg, ten months already

Marc Elvinger, head of corporate M&A, has accepted to share his experience of his first 10 months at Hogan Lovells Luxembourg.

What attracted you to Hogan Lovells?

After 16 years with a major local law firm, I was curious about joining a firm with a world-wide network of offices, all fully integrated. It seemed that the emphasis was put on performing as a one global team, wherever clients or offices are. And it is !

Moreover, heading the corporate practice of the firm 5 years after its launch in Luxembourg was a challenge I wanted to take up. Now I feel really in the driving seat of the ongoing expansion and development of this practice and the office.

From the very beginning, I knew that such an opportunity was unlikely to present itself twice.

On a more personal note, I may add that the personality, vision and professional mind set of both Pierre Reuter, office managing partner and head of the investment funds practice, and Gérard Neiens, partner and head of the tax practice,  appealed to me. A demanding, rewarding and fun working environment is essential to me.


What's different at Hogan Lovells compared to your previous experience?

Being a part of a firm with a global network offers "global" opportunities and gives access to opportunities that a local firm does not necessarily have. Every office operates on a world-wide basis and the aim is always to provide cross-border and cross-practice services which is added-value to the client. Contrary to some outside believes, this collaboration is very smooth and there is no competition between the different offices or practices. It's in fact a very collaborative and pleasant working culture and 100% client focused. As we work hand-in-hand, the quality of the service provided is of a very high standard.

The global processes, which are required at a firm of this size, are new to me. Such processes ensure a constant equality and a high level of coherence among all the offices of the network. Sometimes this can seem to be a bit cumbersome and local specifications are not always taken into account. Our principle of "straight-talk" is here a key element to move things forward.


What’s your day-to-day like?

A growing practice and office means a lot of work so I would say : very busy ! May I add here that we are currently recruiting lawyers to efficiently meet our clients' demands. It's taking time as we don't just want to hire talent but very much also focus on individuals. Our culture is one of diversity, respect and inclusiveness. We put a lot of emphasis on a strong and collaborative team spirit in the different practices but also in the entire office.

Moreover, heading the corporate practice means that I have a certain level of responsibility and commitment with respect to the firm's strategy in this area.

It's meaningful, challenging and exciting.


How has your perspective on your work changed since working for Hogan Lovells?

Cross-selling is the key word, both on a cross-border and cross-practice level ! It creates new opportunities and perspectives for our clients and definitively makes my experience richer.

Our industry sector approach is also a new element to me, which makes a huge difference for our clients.

Being more closely involved in the clients' projects, working with highly client focused and dedicated teams, ensuring that the job is done to the full satisfaction of the client, is really an amazing working experience.

Anything else about your working environment?

Well, as the team continued to grow, we moved from Kirchberg to Merl, an expanding neighborhood as well. We have great facilities for our clients and our people.
